Laicised priest Eleuterio Vásquez, known in Chiclayo as “Lute”, was photographed while celebrating a parish anniversary on March 8, reports InfoVaticana.com. He is standing next to his friend, the priest Edward Tocto. Three women accuse Lute of sexually abusing them when they were minors, between the ages of nine and eleven. He allegedly took them to a rural mountain area, undressed in front of them, and engaged in sexual touching. Lute has admitted to these “sins” but has tried to minimize them by claiming that there was no penetration. Rev Edward Tocto is a canon lawyer and served as the defense attorney of Lute. He is also a personal friend of Leo XIV. Unresolved Legal Case Leo XIV seemingly covered for Lute. As Bishop in Chiclayo, he did NOT suspend him from ministry despite the credible accusations. Vásquez was merely transferred and prohibited from hearing confessions. Then, the judicial case remained largely stalled for years. The girls went to the press and demanded an …More

Listen to the audio version of this content On February 25, 2026, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops filed an amicus curiae brief in Trump v. Barbara, a birthright citizenship case before the Supreme Court. One phrase caught my eye: “As Catholics, our faith compels us to protest laws that deny the dignity of the human person and harm innocent children.” Immigration is a complex issue. Since I study resistance and protest from the Middle Ages down to the present day, how (and how well) my fellow Catholics understand our obligation to engage in political protest is highly interesting to me. In many domains—family life, liturgy, even the nature of citizenship—Catholics rely on a centuries-old tradition of reflection. Political protest is not one such area, however. As Charles Taylor, the Catholic philosopher who won the Ratzinger Prize in 2019, explains in A Secular Age, the public sphere is less than three hundred years old. Medieval kings considered “public opinion …
Leo XIV appointed today two auxiliary bishops in the Archdiocese of Caracas, Venezuela. Monsignor José Manuel León (born 1966 in Barquisimeto) is a Passionist Father, was ordained to the priesthood on 19 March 1994 and is currently a parish priest. Pictured Monsignor José Dionisio Gómez Gouveia (born 1966 in La Guaira) is a diocesan priest of Caracas. He has served in multiple parishes, as a prison chaplain, and in seminary formation. "Beyond Traditions and Rites" Monsignor León's current parish Preciosísima Sangre is in eastern Caracas, near Petare and a slum area. His homilies are published on ParroquiaPreciosisimaSangre.wordpress.com. He uses a Francis-style pastoral tone with the buzzwords mercy, welcome, and fraternity. In a reflection from 8 July 2023, he wrote that Jesus moved beyond a religion sustained “only in traditions,” criticizes a faith reduced to rites, and says it is easy to “wash hands” while failing to extend them “for fraternal embrace.” He also attacks attachment …More
March, 19th 1976 by Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira To even begin to comprehend the nature of Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, we must bear in mind two awe-inspiring facts. St. Joseph is the virgin-husband of Our Lady and the guardian-father of Our Lord. The husband must be proportional to the wife. Saint Joseph’s spouse is the Blessed Virgin Mary, the most perfect of all creatures, and masterpiece of the Creator’s handiwork. In her incomparable person, we find the sum of all the virtues of all the angels, and saints, indeed all creation until the end of time. Even these poor considerations, of course, fail to convey adequately the sublime perfection of the Most Holy Mother of God. From among all men, God chose one man worthy to love and honor the Mother of His Only-Begotten Son as her husband He was a husband proportional to his wife in love of God, purity, wisdom, justice-in every virtue. Saint Joseph was that man. However there remains something even more incomprehensible. …More
Exploring the Apparitions of St. Joseph Each apparition carried a message. Each one deepened devotion to the silent saint who protected the Holy Family. St. Teresa of Ávila’s heavenly provider In 16th-century Spain, St. Teresa of Ávila faced a crisis. She was trying to establish a new convent but had no money to pay the workers. That’s when St. Joseph appeared to her. In her autobiography, she writes: I found myself in desperate need, with no idea how to solve it or pay the laborers. Then St. Joseph – my true father and protector – appeared and assured me that resources would come. I should go ahead and hire the workers. Though I didn’t have a penny, I obeyed. The Lord provided the money in ways that astonished everyone who heard about it (Book of Her Life XXXIII, 12). This wasn’t St. Joseph’s only visit to St. Teresa. Years earlier, in 1521, during the feast of the Assumption, Teresa experienced an ecstasy so intense she nearly lost consciousness. She describes what happened next: …More
