World’s Oldest Trappist Monk, 108, Survivor of Communist Persecution, Has Died. Fr. Benedict Chao, the world’s oldest Trappist monk, died on July 31 at Our Lady of Joy Abbey on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, at the age of 108. Born in Hebei, China, in 1918, Chao entered monastic life in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He belonged to a generation of Chinese Trappists whose monasteries were destroyed during Communist persecution.
