Ancient Chaldean Church vandalized in Northern Iraq | Shalom World News
An ancient witness of Chaldean Christian faith in Iraq has been desecrated in Sharanish, a historic Christian village near Zakho, close to the Iraq–Turkey border. Video from inside Mar Kiriakos Church shows extensive vandalism, with sacred spaces damaged and church property destroyed. The incident has left the local community mourning the incident, which is another blow to a village that has endured years of instability and displacement. Sharanish, home to the Chaldean churches of Mart Shmune and Mar Kiriakos, remains a symbol of the ancient Christian presence in Mesopotamia. As investigations continue, the faithful hold on to a message carried through centuries: a wounded church can still be a living testimony of faith.

Churches in communion with Rome
Who are the Christians of Iraq? A long history …
After periods of Mongol, Turkoman, and Safavid rule, Mesopotamia fell under the Ottomans, whose empire lasted until the First World War in the early 20th century.
It was during the Ottoman period that the East and West Syriac Churches – the Chaldean Catholic Church and the Syriac (or Syrian) Catholic Church, respectively – were formed.
The Syriac Catholic Church was created when a Jacobite patriarch united with Rome in the 18th century. The Bishops who did not enter into full communion with Rome formed the Syriac Orthodox Church.
Today’s Chaldean Catholic Church dates from 1830, when the historical patriarchate of the Church of the East was united with an earlier Chaldean branch created in the 17th century. An even-earlier Chaldean union from the 16th century subsequently separated from Rome and developed into what are today the Assyrian Church of the East and the Ancient Church of the East.

The Eucharist, Altar Rails, and the Dignity of Catholics | The Devil Cannot Kneel ~ Fr. Perricone
Why do Catholics kneel before receiving Holy Communion? Why did altar rails once stand in nearly every Catholic church? And what does kneeling reveal about our dignity as children of God? In this powerful sermon, we are reminded that no man stands taller than when he kneels before Almighty God. Drawing from Sacred Scripture, the teachings of St. John Paul II, G.K. Chesterton, and the wisdom of the Desert Fathers, this sermon explores the profound meaning of kneeling in Eucharistic worship. From St. Peter falling to his knees before Christ, to Mary Magdalene weeping at the Savior's feet, to St. Thomas proclaiming "My Lord and My God," Catholics throughout history have understood that kneeling is the proper response before the King of Glory. The sermon concludes with a striking story from the Desert Fathers concerning Satan himself—a reminder of the eternal significance of humility, adoration …მეტი

Report: Leo XIV Considers Excommunicating All FSSPX Priests

Leo XIV is considering declaring all members of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) schismatics, TribuneChrétienne.com reported on 19 June, citing anonymous sources:
"According to several observers familiar with the matter, the document currently being prepared at the Vatican could go much further than some imagine. It would not merely acknowledge a rupture affecting the bishops or superiors of the FSSPX. The repercussions could extend to the entire structure, including its approximately 700 priests, seminaries, apostolates and the faithful who regularly attend its chapels around the world."
The bishops' ordinations are scheduled for 1 July, with Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta as the principal consecrator and Bishop Bernard Fellay as the co-consecrator.
For weeks, rumours about the excommunication of all members of the FSSPX have persisted on various Catholic news blogs and among journalists.

Many World Cup Fans Would Rather Skip the Hydration Breaks
It’s hot in North America in June, but fans are griping that the breaks that have been added to each half are an excuse for the networks to show more ads.
nytimes.com/2026/06/18/us/world-cup-hydration-bre…
By Victor Mather June 18, 2026
The “hydration breaks” that have been added to World Cup matches have not been met with universal acclaim from players and fans, not least because some TV networks are using them to squeeze in extra ads.
It’s hot in much of North America in June, and in some places very hot. So it would seem natural that players at the World Cup, currently underway in the United States, Mexico and Canada, get quick breaks to grab a drink in the middle of each half.
But the pauses have not been broadly popular. Beside annoyance over the extra ads, fans are upset that the flow of the game is interrupted, and some believe that the team they are rooting for can somehow lose “momentum” as a result of the break. …მეტი

Cardinal Ruini's Testament: "Francis Reopened Wounds"

MessaInLatino.it published today the spiritual testament of Cardinal Camillo Ruini, signed on June 3, 2016. He died on June 16, 2026 at the age of 95.
Cardinal Ruini's testament is a personal reflection on his life, giving thanks to God for his family, vocation, and ministry in the Church.
More than 90% of the sentences are written in the first person singular, with verbs such as ringrazio ('I thank'), confesso ('I confess'), ho cercato ('I have tried'), and sono stato ('I have been') making Ruini the grammatical subject in nearly every sentence. The testament provides a detailed account of his family life, his work as a priest and bishop, his collaborations, and his public importance. A sympathetic reading of his frequent use of first-person pronouns (I, me, my, mine) might suggest that spiritual testaments traditionally belong to an autobiographical and introspective literary genre.
The paragraph that focuses least on himself is the best one, dealing with Pope Francis's pontificate: …მეტი

Leo XIV Confirms November Return to Peru

Leo XIV intends to visit Peru during the first half of November, Peruvian President José María Balcázar announced following a private audience with the Pope.
Peru would be the centerpiece of a broader South American tour that may also include Argentina and Uruguay.
Although the Vatican has not yet published an official itinerary, Balcázar said Leo XIV personally confirmed that he plans to be in Peru in November.
The proposed itinerary would include Lima, Chiclayo, Piura, Pucallpa and Cusco, with additional visits to Puno and Iquitos also under consideration.
The visit could last between eight and ten days.
Balcázar said Peru has offered helicopters to assist the Pope in reaching remote towns in northern Peru and the Amazon region, reflecting his desire to visit as many local communities as possible.
Argentina, the homeland of Francis, was never visited by him during his thirteen years as pope. A visit by Leo XIV would mark the first papal trip to Argentina since 1987.

Argentine Bishops Thank God for the 'Courage' of an Abortion Activist

The Argentine Bishops' Conference issued a tribute to the abortion activist Taty Almeida, 95, following her death on June 14.
In a June 15 statement signed by Archbishop Marcelo Colombo, president of the conference, and Bishop Raúl Pizarro, secretary general, the bishops sarcastically praised Almeida's "historic commitment to human rights". They even “thanked God for sustaining her courage”.
Almeida was one of Argentina's best-known “human-rights” activists. She was a longtime member of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo movement about people who disappeared during Argentina's military dictatorship.
The bishops' statement ignored her support for abortion.
Almeida publicly supported Argentina's abortion movement. She frequently appeared wearing the green scarf that became the symbol of the campaign for legal abortion and backed the effort that led to abortion legalization in 2020.
Almeida was closely associated with sectors of the Argentine caviar left and often appeared alongside progressive …მეტი

Cardinals McElroy and Cupich Endorse Fr. James Martin’s Pro-LGBT Conference

Cardinal Robert McElroy and Cardinal Blase Cupich, the heterodox archbishops of Washington, D.C., and Chicago, as well as Eduardo Peñalver, the incoming pro-LGBT president of the Jesuit Georgetown University, each sent greetings to attendees of Father James Martin’s Outreach Conference this weekend.
In an X post, Outreach shared three letters dated June 19 written by McElroy, who will be speaking at the conference, Cupich, and Peñalver that offered encouragement and prayers to conference attendees, some of whom are likely not living in accordance with Catholic teaching, and emphasized the “new ministry” toward “LGBT Catholics” under Popes Francis and Leo.
Martin’s 2026 Outreach Conference, entitled “Walking Side by Side: Celebrating Five Years of Outreach Ministries,” will take place June 19-21 at Georgetown University with LGBTQ lay people, clergy, scholars, artists, educators, students and family members to celebrate five years of Outreach ministry.

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — Niger’s military junta announced a new penal code that criminalizes homosexuality, an adviser to the justice minister said Friday.
The West African nation is the latest to criminalize homosexuality, following
similar measures earlier this year in Senegal.
The new penal code punishes anyone who “commits or attempts to commit an immodest or unnatural act or practices lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender, Queer, intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+) acts” with between five and 10 years in prison and a fine, according to the text of the new penal code.
“This same penalty is applicable to persons who officiated the marriage, to the witnesses of the alleged spouses, as well as to persons who have given their consent for the celebration of the marriage and to the …

Masturbation and voodoo artwork in Paris churches. Worse than Germany: During the 'Nuit Blanche' event organised by the Paris Archdiocese on June 6-7, there were 'immersive installations' in churches. This infamous event was directed by Barbara Butch, a lesbian activist who is known for playing Jesus Christ in the controversial opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics. According to a video published by TribuneChrétienne.com, the installation featured satanic sounds, overlapping voices, whispers, creaks, breathing and what the organisers described as an exploration of 'dark ideas', 'an unstable perception of reality' and a 'quasi-hypnotic' atmosphere. Inside the churches, there were voodoo-inspired masks, grotesque figures, and skeletal humanoid sculptures. One figure appeared to simulate masturbation near an altar.

Pope Leo XIV on the upcoming SSPX Episcopal Consecrations: “I am considering making another appeal saying don't do this, let's try to live the communion of the Church. But it's their choice. One must realize what it means for them and for the Church. Certainly, the division among Christians is a painful point. However, they refuse to accept some fundamental elements of the Church, starting with several points from the Second Vatican Council. If they make that decision, I'm sorry but we have to move on.”

SAINT ROMUALD Abbot - June 19
(c. 952-1027)
In the midst of a wasted youth, Romuald watched his father kill a relative in a duel over property. In horror he fled to a monastery near Ravenna. After three years, some of the monks found him to be uncomfortably holy and eased him out.
Romuald spent the next 30 years going about Italy, founding monasteries and hermitages. He longed to give his life to Christ in martyrdom, and got the pope’s permission to preach the gospel in Hungary. But he was struck with illness as soon as he arrived, and the illness recurred as often as he tried to proceed.
During another period of his life, Romuald suffered great spiritual dryness. One day as he was praying Psalm 31 (“I will give you understanding and I will instruct you”), he was given an extraordinary light and spirit which never left him.
At the next monastery where he stayed, Romuald was accused of a scandalous crime by a young nobleman he had rebuked for a dissolute life. Amazingly, his fellow …მეტი
