Benedict Chao, the world’s oldest Trappist monk, died on July 31 at Our Lady of Joy Abbey on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, at the age of 108. Born in Hebei, China, in 1918, Chao entered monastic life in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He belonged to a generation of Chinese Trappists whose monasteries were destroyed during Communist persecution. After fleeing mainland China, Chao and fellow monks lived for a time in Canada and the United States before rebuilding their monastic community in Hong Kong.

New Apostolate for the Roman rite in Canada: The Institute of the Good Shepherd (IBP) has established a new apostolate for the traditional Roman Rite in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, with the permission of Archbishop Guy Desrochers.
